As we covered in part one of this article series, many luxury watch manufacturers have rules prohibiting their authorized dealers from selling their products online. Is this rule fair and reasonable? As you may have guessed, the opinion of this author is that this rule is NOT fair. Why? Let's consider a few reasons:

1) The internet -- the future is now.
The internet has become a virtual world encompassing almost all aspects of life; after all, it is known as the "information superhighway" right? People use the internet for social networking, shopping, medical advice, car repair and home improvement info, and much much more. Without the internet, chances are that many, if not most of us would not even know what luxury watch manufacturers exist. What's the point? When it comes to internet sales, many manufacturers need to "get with it." By using authorized online dealers to sell their products, more people would be aware of those products. This leads to the next point:

2) Accessibility to the consumer.
Right now, if I want to shop for many luxury watches from an "authorized" dealer, I have to travel at least 50 miles from where I live and in order to shop some of the more exclusive brands, I'd have to travel some 230 miles to Chicago, Illinois. So, my choice is either to buy from an unauthorized source OR travel significant distance. Some may say,"if you've got the money to buy a luxury watch, travel is no big deal for you." The watch features the SRC logo on the obverse in color along with the French language motto "Vouloir, Croire et Oser", which translates in English to "Want, Believe and Dare". This branding may be important to a special ops soldier, military veteran or collector, but it should be understood that such branding comes with a price premium.

PROS:

Overall the watch has a heft and feeling of quality and refinement, it should prove quite satisfying for those looking for a unique style military piece. The stainless steel case is coated in black via Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD which bonds to the steel on a molecular level, meaning no chipping or flaking and high resistance to scratching (as are the crown and two activators). The mineral crystal is slightly domed and without flaws. The screw back is non-coated stainless with the SRC color logo inset at center and encapsulated in what appears to be mineral crystal. On the back is also the lightly etched Wenger logo and specs.

*The face of this watch is the draw for many; a large clean, crisp dial in "nuclear green" with three sub-dials in the same hue. The watch is quite readable at most angles although the rather large arrow point hour/minute hands can obscure the sub-dials. If you want something strikingly clean and purposeful, this is it.

*The luminance of the dial at night is astonishing! Every detail is visible in the dark after just a couple hours of sun. If the watch is exposed to sun (even overcast, winter skies in the Northeast US) it will be visible throughout the darkest, moonless nights. I have never owned a watch with this ability.

*The rubber(*) strap is substantial and comfortable.

*The 30 minute/12 hour chronograph is intuitive and accurate. The lap time feature is easy to use.

CONS:

You can easily buy a watch with the same quality and more functions for less money. Without the SRC branding, unique style dial and Swiss caveat this watch would be priced 0 less.

*I am a fan of the accuracy of battery-quartz watches, but there is no excuse for selling one at this price point without a solar recharging system similar to Citizen's Eco-Drive. I purchased this Wenger despite the fact that one day in the near future I know it will stop working and I will have to take it to a jeweler for an expensive battery replacement/resealing. The Japanese have figured out how to do this, why haven't the Swiss?

*Lacking a screw down crown and only certified to 10atm is a bit lackluster for a 0+ watch branded to a rigorous military competition. I would be highly dubious of jumping into a lake or snorkeling with a watch lacking a screw-down crown. I own two Citizens (one titanium) rated to 20atm with the same features plus solar and screw crowns costing 0 less. Once again, the Swiss need to catch up.

*The crystal is neither sapphire nor non-reflective, add to that its slight dome and I wonder how long before an unsightly scratch? A rugged military time piece of this price should have a sapphire crystal.

*While the rubber(*) band is comfortable and thick, it's also quite gummy. Time will tell how durable it is but it seems as though if pulled too hard over time it might harden and separate. Once again I feel a military branded piece such as this should have been given a more durable band.

SUM UP:

While this Wenger is a quality watch and has some collector appeal, its main selling point is appearance, not function or economy. There are dozens of watches which perform the same functions with similar or better quality at a much lower cost. But if you're a sucker for a striking "nuclear green" on black watch which will perform perfectly until the battery runs out, then you'll buy one just as I have and enjoy it in the dark!

(*)It is unclear whether the band material on this watch is organic rubber or silicone rubber. The Wenger site states that the band of this watch is "rubber" while using the term "silicon" for bands on other watches. This is an important distinction and one which Wenger should clear up.

Invicta Men's 5249S Pro Diver Stainless Steel Silver Dial Watch Review

I was looking for a new analog watch with a functional bezel, and day/date calendar function. This one fit the bill, and at a reasonable price. It's a nice looking watch, just like in the pictures. It arrived very nicely packaged, with protective plastic not only on the crystal face, but also on the back and all over the bracelet. I haven't yet given it a good test of its water resistance, but it survived a shower without any problem.

A few small quibbles, not really complaints:

The day and date displays are quite small, odd since everything else on the watch is BIG. The date window in particular (day of month) is small, deep-set, and for some strange reason is framed in black - that makes the date a little difficult to read sometimes.

And speaking of size, this is a big watch. I'm a 6-ft guy, so although I'm kinda lanky I'm not really small. Yet this watch takes up my whole wrist - looking at it, all you see is the watch, the bracelet just goes straight down and around the wrist. Also, I had to remove ALL the extra links in the bracelet to make it fit on my wrist.

Lastly, as someone else noted, the bezel clicks 6 times for every 5 minutes of rotation (or 72 times to go all the way around). Not really a problem, doesn't affect the watch's functionality, but a little odd.

Short History

Soon after their launch Swatch watches took over the world. In 1984 they managed to sell 2.3 millions of them. In the mid 80's they took over United States with those infamous Swatch stores. Sky seemed to be the limit.

They were fashionable and cheap. Their fashionability soon had though a boomerang effect and soon after these watches came out of fashion. Nonetheless their sales are rather high to this date and the Swatch company is the biggest manufacturer of its kind in the world.

Contrary to popular belief the name Swatch in itself does not derive from "Swiss watch", but from "second watch". This company grasped the moment when pop culture was at its height and became an integral part of it. A Swatch watch is a disposable one. Nothing reflects better this thinking than their early success.

The 90's came though and a new sense of welfare was established. The irrational exuberance of the 80's was over once for all. Swatch attempted to change their image accordingly without much success though.

As the company moved on into the new millennium, the acute need of finding the authentic and original in everything we buy found its way in the corporate thinking of the Swatch executives. Nowadays Swatch watches may appear where you don't expect them as the group purchased a lot of Swiss luxury brands. The quest for cheap watches is hopefully over, the quest for quality has just started.

No matter how much you think of it, when Swatch watches appear in your mind the first image coming will be one of a colorful, bright watch with a certain uniqueness to it.
